John Hillcoat has directed two films only, but I absolutely LOVED the both of them. The movies of which I speak are The Proposition (that crazy, brilliant and hardcore Australian Western with Guy Pearce, Danny Huston and Ray Winstone) and The Road (the stark but beautiful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pullitzer Prize winning novel starring Viggo Mortensen and others). Okay, let me correct myself, he has directed four movies, but the first two (Ghosts... of the Civil Dead and To Have & To Hold) are older and virtually unknown. Maybe I will track them down sometime. Anyway, Hillcoat is primarily known as a director of music videos, and as such he has a distinct visual style (much like his contemporaries, which include David Fincher, Mark Romanek and Spike Jonze).
The latest offering from John Hillcoat has been a long time coming. Quite a few years in fact. It was initially called The Wettest County in the World (the title of the novel by Matt Bondurant), then just The Wettest County and the other day the name changed again to Lawless. You may recall that to be the title of Terrence Malick's next movie, but he graciously gave up the title after being asked to do so by Hillcoat & Co. Nice man. Enough nonsense though, Lawless has a phenomenal cast (including Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain) and has looked brilliant from the word go. In fact, the film is ranked Number 21 on my 50 Most Anticipated Films of 2012. Seeing this trailer, I again wonder why it isn't higher up on the list! Hit the jump.
All I can say about this trailer is... Tom Hardy once again looks both brilliant and dangerous. Unstable, angry, crazy. He plays those characters so well. Man, this looks good!
