This is not a music blog, but music videos are no different to short films in the musical genre, so they too may find a home here sometimes. Die Antwoord's new album (TEN$ION) arrives in a few days, and their latest music video for I Fink U Freeky has just been released. Who is Die Antwoord you ask? Just google them. A zef South African rap duo with some weird-ass music and a massive record deal at Interscope (which is now over apparently). I'm not a huge fan of all their music, but their visual style is unbelievably awesome: words cannot describe how kick-ass their website, music videos, album covers, everything is (at least, my words can't). In fact, it's so kick-ass that Yo-landi Vi$$er's look is what inspired David Fincher's incarnation of Lisbeth Salander in last year's superb The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
This terrific music video is directed by Roger Ballen, one of the best photographers in the world, and who's eye for the bizarre has been influential in Die Antwoord's image since their early days. Finally, he gets to direct an entire music video, and the result is basically one of his signature compositions, in motion. I don't even want to attempt to describe the genius, dark, freakishness at work in this video. Just look at it and see. Oh, and the song is pretty awesome too. After the video, check out a picture of Yo-landi Vi$$er that is on their website front page and new album cover. I wanted to use it as the banner for this post, but feared it may traumatise the unsuspecting.
