Cloud Atlas Bits: Production Has Wrapped, Concept Art and Sonmi-451

The photo you see above (courtesy of Empire) was released more than a week ago, and I saw it as simply an official "behind the scenes" picture from the upcoming film Cloud Atlas. As much  as I liked the photo and its contents (which I will get into below), I only realised now that it is in fact a picture taken to celebrate the fact that filming has wrapped. I mentioned in my previous post that filming should be over soonish, but I didn't realise it would be now already. Wow, a job well done! I'm always amazed at just how quick the actual filming process can be. It felt like just the other day when they started filming. Hit the jump for some more on the photo, and for some cool concept art also released the other day.

Okay so, for those who know the book, it's pretty obvious what this photo contains (and it has been mentioned in about a million posts like this one). Apart from the trio of directors (front and centre), the author of the book David Mitchell (seated back and centre) and the producers of the film, the photo contains a little piece from every story:

  • The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing - two totem statues (I've read they are from Sloosha's Crossin'm but I don't agree);
  • Letters from Zedelghem - the piano of course;
  • Half Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery - the VW Beetle;
  • An Orison of Sonmi~451 - the blue hovercraft and the Papa Song balloons (apparently the colour is relevant?);
  • Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After - presumably the cart on the left.
That's five stories. So where does The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish fit in? The only props left in the photo are the arches in the background. I haven't read the book recently enough though, and so I can only speculate that those arches may be present at the retirement home or something. I really have no idea. All in all though, it's really nice to see something different from a behind the scenes perspective.

More recently, I came across the following three pictures on Slashfilm. The first is the first we have seen of Doona Bae as Sonmi-451, the second is the futuristic Seoul / Nea So Copros in An Orison of Sonmi~451 (showing a chase scene which, no doubt, includes the hovercraft in the photo above), and the third is a general image depicting the blending together of the first and the fifth story. I'm not sure how exactly this image will find its way into the final product, but I really like the look of all the concept art we have seen so far. And once again, I cannot emphasise how stoked I am that Doona Bae is in this one!
